Last year no one wanted to give me a job, even as a temp.
After early career successes in India (by the age of 22 I had got my MBA and went on to consult the Indian government on running effective health programmes), my parents suggested I saw the world. I met my partner, Robin, in March 2009 and decided to stay in the UK with him.
I didn’t have a job to go to and found it was tough to get work. I think employers were hesitant to give work to an unknown entity, and in some ways, I was over-qualified.
Then I went to a Life Club intensive on work. I was nervous about going but Robin was insistent that I should. I remember an exercise in which I was asked to think about how a tiger would find a job. I started thinking about how the tiger conserves energy, collects information and then goes for the kill - and I knew that’s what I had to do if I wanted to find a job.
By the end of the day I had lots of ideas and was full of enthusiasm. A week later I had an interview and I made a resolution that I’d do really well in the interview.
Eight months later I’ve got some consultancy work and feel much more confident. The effect of the workshop has lasted a long time. The tiger is watching out, waiting to pounce!
